Prada has put skirts at the centre of its latest Milan collection, presenting an all-skirt show as the fashion house opened Milan fashion week.

Every one of the 63 looks featured a skirt, with the collection avoiding both trousers and dresses. The designs focused largely on knee-length and A-line shapes, alongside pleated and leather styles.

Miuccia Prada said she prefers skirts because they allow contrasting ideas to be combined. The collection paired skirts with sweaters, shirts, lace bras and other contrasting pieces, creating looks intended for different settings.

Belgian designer Raf Simons, who has shared Prada’s design responsibilities with Miuccia Prada for the past six years, said the decision to focus entirely on skirts developed from Prada’s original idea for the collection.

The show included grey wool, lemon, pleated leather and printed silk skirts, with some designs layered with sheer fabrics or detailed with embroidery. Bare legs and simple high heels featured throughout the collection.

The collection comes as several major Italian fashion houses undergo changes in creative leadership. Versace, which is now owned by Prada, will not hold a show during this Milan fashion week, while new designer Pieter Mulier is preparing for his debut next season.

Armani is also in a period of transition, while Fendi has appointed Maria Grazia Chiuri to lead the brand. The changes mark a shift for Milan’s traditionally family-led fashion industry.
