A 42-year-old mother has been charged after one child died and two others were seriously injured in an alleged stabbing in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to a vehicle in Valley Heights on Sunday, where three children and the woman were found with stab wounds. Police said bystanders who arrived first attempted first aid while contacting Triple Zero.

A five-year-old child died at the scene. Two other children, aged one and three, were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital, where they remain in a critical but stable condition, according to reports from the ABC and The Guardian.

The woman was also taken to Westmead Hospital. NSW police said she had not previously come to their attention.

Police charged the woman on Tuesday with murder, marked as domestic-violence related, and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. She was refused bail and is due to remain in custody until her next court appearance.

Police have said investigators are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The case followed a weekend in which three women were allegedly killed in separate domestic violence incidents across NSW. Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna described the weekend as devastating, according to the Guardian.

The allegations against the woman have not been tested in court. The investigation and court proceedings are continuing.
