Independent MP for Indi Helen Haines remains in a critical but stable condition after being seriously injured outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria, on 19 October.
Her husband, Phil Haines, confirmed that surgeons had to amputate both of her legs. He said the family was grateful that, at the time of his update, her heart and mind were in good shape. Haines continues to receive hospital care.
What happened in court?
Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He was not required to enter a plea, and no bail application was made. He is expected to return to court on 4 February 2027.
Police have charged Nugent with offences relating to the alleged incident, including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. ABC News also reported additional cannabis-related charges. These are allegations before the courts; the charges have not been proven.
The court heard that Nugent’s lawyer raised neurological and mental health concerns. The magistrate requested that a mental health professional see him. Police have not established a confirmed motive publicly, and the matter remains subject to investigation and court proceedings.
Community support and questions about security
Flowers, cards and messages of support have continued to appear outside Haines’ electorate office as people in the Wangaratta region respond to the incident.
The case has also prompted discussion about how Australia can protect elected representatives while preserving the close contact between MPs and the communities they serve. Haines is known for her work in regional Victoria, including her earlier career in healthcare.
Any policy changes will need to balance the safety of public officials with the ability of residents to meet their representatives. The court proceedings have not established a motive, and it is important not to treat speculation about the accused as fact.
