Earl Spencer has apologised to broadcaster Piers Morgan after acknowledging an incorrect assumption in his new memoir about Princess Diana.
Spencer’s book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, stated that Morgan was responsible in part for the publication of intrusive photographs of Diana exercising in a gym in 1993.
Morgan disputed the account, pointing out that the photographs were published by the Sunday Mirror on 7 November 1993, while he did not join the Daily Mirror until October 1995. At the time the photographs appeared, Morgan was working at the Sun.
Spencer subsequently issued a statement saying he had incorrectly assumed Morgan was editor of the Daily Mirror when the photographs were published. He apologised for the error and said accuracy was important to him as a historian.
The statement also maintained Spencer’s account of a separate telephone conversation with Morgan before Diana’s funeral. Morgan has disputed Spencer’s description of his manner during that call, saying he was respectful rather than surly or annoyed.
Morgan has said the apology does not end the dispute. He has announced that he intends to pursue legal action against Spencer and the book’s publisher, Penguin, over what he describes as false and defamatory claims.
The disagreement comes as Spencer’s memoir generates wider controversy over its claims about Diana and members of the royal family. Other claims in the book have also drawn public responses, including from Buckingham Palace.
The legal dispute remains separate from the factual correction Spencer has already issued over the 1993 photographs.
