Victorian opposition backs ADHD GP diagnosis plan but warns regions left short

The Victorian opposition has backed the state government’s move to allow GPs to diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication, while warning the rollout does not go far enough.

Opposition health spokesperson Georgie Crozier said she had been calling for the reform for some time and welcomed the decision in principle.

Crozier said the change addressed a long-standing problem but argued Victoria was still lagging behind other jurisdictions.

Under the plan, the first 150 GPs will be trained to diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication, easing pressure on specialist services.

Crozier said the government must ensure those doctors are spread across the state, particularly in regional areas.

She warned access to psychiatrists outside Melbourne remains severely limited.

“Those waitlists are months and years,” Crozier said, adding the government needed to do more to address shortages across Victoria.
