President Donald Trump took centre stage in Dallas as Republican supporters gathered for the party’s first midterm convention, with a large crowd greeting him with chants of “USA! USA!”
A video posted from the event shows a packed section of the American Airlines Center as Trump takes the stage. The footage captures a highly energetic reception from supporters gathered for the two-day Republican event.
The Republican Midterm Convention is being held at the American Airlines Center on September 9 and 10. Organisers describe it as the first time Republicans have held a midterm convention, with the event focused on highlighting the Trump administration’s record, Republican candidates and the party’s agenda ahead of the November elections.
Country singer Lee Greenwood performed “God Bless the U.S.A.” as Trump was introduced, with supporters responding with loud applause and chants. The event has been promoted as a “Trumpapalooza”, reflecting the president’s central role in the gathering.
The convention comes less than two months before the November midterm elections, with Republicans seeking to mobilise their supporters and maintain control of Congress.
Trump’s appearance has made him the main draw for many attendees, with reporting from Dallas describing supporters arriving primarily to see the president rather than for traditional party business.
The video does not independently establish the total size of the crowd or whether the venue was completely full. It does, however, show a strong and visibly enthusiastic reaction among the supporters captured in the footage.
