A mixed formation of aircraft has flown over Melbourne as the city builds towards the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The flypast was captured in a short video shared by Melbourne radio producer Leon Sjogren, who expressed his excitement about the occasion despite saying he is not usually an NFL fan.
The footage shows multiple smaller fixed-wing aircraft producing long white smoke trails, alongside several larger tiltrotor aircraft flying in the same general direction. The formation passes across a clear daytime sky above an urban area.
The larger aircraft have the distinctive appearance of the MV-22 Osprey family, while the smaller smoke-trailing aircraft appear consistent with turboprop display aircraft. However, the video does not show clear national markings, serial numbers or unit insignia, so the exact aircraft models and units cannot be confirmed from the footage alone.
The video also does not show the Melbourne Cricket Ground, meaning the footage itself cannot establish that the aircraft were flying directly over the stadium.
The flypast comes as Melbourne prepares to host the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in a landmark NFL event on September 11, 2026. The surrounding NFL Kickoff Festival has brought a major sporting atmosphere to the city, with fans and residents taking notice of the event.
The aircraft display also adds to the broader significance of the day, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The video itself, however, does not independently establish a connection between the aircraft formation and the anniversary.
With aircraft visible across parts of Melbourne and the city preparing for its first NFL regular-season game, the flypast has become another striking part of the day’s atmosphere.
