NSW police say a fatal shooting at a community centre in Sydney’s southwest does not appear to be connected to recent shootings allegedly linked to an ongoing feud between two organised crime networks.

A man was fatally shot in the car park of a community centre in Punchbowl on Wednesday evening. Police said a car was seen leaving the scene, while the victim was known to police.

Acting assistant commissioner Grant Taylor told reporters on Thursday that the shooting did not appear to have the same characteristics as the other shootings recorded in recent months.

“This shooting appears to be an individual person acting alone at this stage. We don’t believe in the infancy of its investigation that it does relate to the ongoing feud between the two organised crime networks you are aware of,” Taylor said.

Taylor said the victim was also known to Queensland police and that there were links to outlaw motorcycle gangs. He said that could be a possible reason for the killing, although the investigation was still in its early stages.

The shooting occurred two days after NSW Premier Chris Minns announced measures aimed at curbing gangland violence in Sydney, including new aggravated offences for conspiracy to commit gang-related murder. The maximum penalty under the proposed changes will be life imprisonment.

Police last week said shootings in Glen Alpine and Merrylands were being investigated as mistaken-identity killings allegedly involving organised crime groups.
