Albanese marks 75 years of Australia-US alliance after meeting Congress members

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has highlighted the longstanding Australia-US alliance after meeting members of the United States Congress, as Australia and the US mark 75 years since the ANZUS Treaty was signed.

In a post on X, Albanese said Australia and the United States had “stood side by side for 75 years” and described the alliance as being built on trust and shaped by democratic values.

Albanese said he had met with members of the US Congress as both countries work towards what he described as a stronger future. Photos shared with the post show the prime minister meeting US lawmakers in a setting featuring Australian and American flags.

The 75th anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty was formally marked on 1 September 2026. The treaty was signed in 1951 and formalised the Australia-US alliance, while also establishing the original three-country security arrangement involving Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

The Australian government describes the United States as Australia’s closest ally and principal strategic partner. The alliance remains an important part of Australia’s defence and security relationship with the US, including cooperation on defence capabilities, training, combined exercises and intelligence.

The alliance has also continued to develop through newer security arrangements, including AUKUS, while Australia and the United States work together on regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Albanese’s meeting with members of Congress comes as the two countries reflect on the history of their alliance and look towards its future role in Australia’s national security and regional cooperation.
