Police officer killed in Redfern crash

A NSW Police officer has been killed after a marked police vehicle crashed into a tree in Redfern early Friday morning.

NSW Police said the vehicle was travelling north along Gibbons Street with its lights and sirens activated when the crash occurred at about 1.30am.

The passenger, a female constable, died instantly. The male constable driving the vehicle was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene has been established and the incident has been declared a critical incident as inquiries continue.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the news would be deeply felt across the NSW policing community and expressed his thoughts for the injured officer and those who responded to the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash, including relevant dashcam or mobile phone footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police said no further information was available at this stage.
