The federal government will invest an additional $100 million over the next decade into advanced arthritis medical research, targeting a debilitating condition that currently impacts approximately 7 million Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Health Minister Mark Butler will formally announce the establishment of a new arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions research mission later today.
The long-term initiative will be funded through the government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
The strategic plan is designed to coordinate efforts between leading medical researchers, healthcare professionals, industry experts, and patients to significantly advance the prevention, early diagnosis, and clinical treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
Strengthening National Health
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasised that the funding injection addresses a major public health challenge that restricts the daily lives and economic participation of millions of citizens.
“For millions of Australians, living with arthritis isn’t just an ache or pain, it affects their ability to work, to stay active and to enjoy everyday life,” Mr Albanese said.
“My government is investing in medical research because it is an investment that changes lives and strengthens our nation’s health.”
The $100 million commitment represents a sustained 10-year funding pipeline focused entirely on structural improvements within the Australian healthcare and research sectors to manage chronic pain conditions more effectively.
