Piers Morgan says he plans to take legal action against Earl Spencer over claims about him in Spencer’s new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.

Morgan, speaking on his YouTube programme Piers Morgan Uncensored, disputed Spencer’s account that he was involved in the publication of photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales, taken while she was working out in a gym.

Spencer’s book says Morgan was among newspaper editors contacted about Diana’s funeral and describes him as reacting angrily during a phone call. The memoir also links Morgan to the publication of the gym photographs.

Morgan rejected that account and said the photographs were published by the Sunday Mirror on 7 November 1993. He said he did not join the Daily Mirror until October 1995 and was working for the Sun when the photographs appeared.

Morgan said the difference in dates meant he could not have been responsible for the Mirror publication in the way described in the book. He also questioned Spencer’s wider account and said his lawyers would contact Spencer and the book’s publishers.

Spencer was contacted for comment through the public relations agency representing his publisher, Penguin Random House.

The dispute comes as Swan Song: Diana, My Sister reaches readers and attracts wider attention for Spencer’s accounts of Diana’s life, her death and the royal family.

Australia By Aussie has also reported on Earl Spencer’s later apology to Piers Morgan over an incorrect assumption in the book.
