A man has described losing about 25,000 XRP and other cryptocurrency assets worth around $60,000 after entering his wallet’s seed phrase while trying to access an airdrop.

In a video interview, the man says the incident happened in June after he asked for a link to a Flare airdrop while participating in a crypto group. He says the link led him to connect his wallet, where he was asked to provide his seed phrase.

He says he questioned the request in the group and was told it was secure. He then entered his seed phrase while attempting to connect the wallet.

According to his account, the connection failed several times and he decided to try again the following morning.

When he woke up, he says his cryptocurrency had already been taken. He says there were other tokens in the wallet and that he was able to save a small amount, but estimated the total value of the assets lost at about $60,000.

The man says his XRP holdings alone were about 25,000 tokens. He also says the value of what he lost could have reached roughly $100,000 after XRP rose in July.

He describes the incident as a major personal setback and says he blamed himself for lowering his guard. He also warns other cryptocurrency users that scammers can use airdrops and online groups to gain access to sensitive wallet information.

The video does not independently establish who operated the airdrop link, whether the people in the crypto group were involved in the theft, or whether the wallet manufacturer was responsible. The man himself says he cannot establish whether the creator of the material was involved and only believes it is possible.

Tangem’s security guidance warns users never to provide a seed phrase to a website or another person and identifies fake airdrops and requests to connect a wallet as common phishing tactics.

Tangem also says that for second-generation seed-phrase wallets, the seed phrase is used to generate private keys that are stored on the hardware device. The reported incident therefore does not, on its own, establish that the Tangem hardware itself was compromised.

The video is a firsthand account of the reported loss. The exact destination of the stolen assets and the identity of whoever may have accessed them were not established in the material reviewed.
