One Nation senator Pauline Hanson has urged senators to support her party’s Protecting Australians from Foreign Terrorist Fighters Bill 2026, sharing video of her Senate speech in which she warned against voting the legislation down.

The private senator’s bill, introduced by Hanson in August, remains before the Senate. It was referred to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee, with the committee’s report tabled on 7 September.

The proposed legislation would create a foreign terrorist fighter exclusion order scheme through the Federal Court. Under the bill, the Minister for Home Affairs could apply to the court for an order preventing a person from returning to Australia in circumstances covered by the proposed law.

The bill also proposes changes to bail arrangements for people charged with or convicted of terrorism offences, making community protection and national security key considerations.

Other provisions would expand circumstances in which Australian travel documents could be refused, cancelled or suspended, including where an exclusion order or relevant terrorism charge or conviction applies.

The legislation would also create an offence for organising or facilitating the return of a foreign terrorist fighter to Australia without prior written permission from the relevant ministers. The proposed penalty is up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Hanson has argued the measures are needed in response to Australians linked to Islamic State and concerns about people held overseas potentially returning to Australia.

The bill has faced constitutional concerns from the government, while its provisions have been referred for parliamentary scrutiny by the Senate’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee.

In her post on X, Hanson said the Senate was debating the bill and warned senators who were considering voting against it.
