Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia is still considering Donald Trump’s invitation to join a “board of peace” but has downplayed any likely involvement.
Penny Wong said the government was continuing to assess the proposal but noted it differed from Australia’s usual approach to international engagement.
The invitation comes from former US president Donald Trump and would involve Australia joining a formal treaty-based arrangement.
Wong said Australia remained focused on existing partnerships, including the Quad and the Aukus agreement.
She noted New Zealand had already declined the invitation.
Asked when a decision would be made, Wong said the government was still working through the proposal and seeking greater clarity on Washington’s intentions.
She said Australia continued to work closely with the United States in areas aligned with shared strategic interests.
