Melbourne’s long-awaited Metro Tunnel has officially entered service, with new train timetables rolling out from Sunday as part of what the Victorian state government is calling “the big switch”.
The $15 billion project introduces additional services running through the new Metro Tunnel, which was first announced in 2015 and officially opened in November last year.
According to the state government, the changes are designed to reduce congestion across the metropolitan rail network by increasing capacity and improving service reliability.
The timetable update also includes changes to bus routes in parts of regional Victoria and inner-city Melbourne to better align with the new train services.
Five new underground stations form part of the project, including State Library station, expanding rail access through the heart of Melbourne.
