Sydney pro-Palestine organisers say they will rally against Isaac Herzog’s visit despite an extended NSW police ban on authorised protests.
The Palestine Action Group has vowed to proceed with a rally in Sydney this week despite NSW police extending restrictions on protests for a fourth time.
The rally is planned in opposition to the visit of Israeli president Isaac Herzog, who is due to begin a four-day tour of Australia following an invitation from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
NSW police commissioner Mal Lanyon said Herzog’s visit was a factor in extending the protest restriction, which prevents authorised marches in designated areas and exposes participants to arrest if offences such as blocking traffic are alleged.
Despite the extension, organisers said they would proceed without the legal protections usually granted to authorised protests.
In a statement, the Palestine Action Group said it would rally at Sydney Town Hall from 5.30pm on Friday evening.
The group described the gathering as peaceful and called on police to facilitate the rally and a planned march to NSW Parliament.
