Senate backs motion condemning Perth rally attack

The federal senate has passed a motion condemning an alleged attempted bombing at an Invasion Day rally in Perth.

The motion was introduced by independent senator Lidia Thorpe following the 26 January incident in Boorloo.

It condemns the alleged attempted bombing targeting First Peoples and their supporters at an Invasion Day rally.

The motion notes the incident is being investigated by the Western Australia Joint Counter Terrorism Team as a potential terrorist act.

It affirms the federal government’s duty to equally protect all people from racism, discrimination, hate speech and racially motivated violence.

The motion also acknowledges that 26 January is a day of mourning for many First Nations people and describes the alleged attack as an escalation of racial violence.

Parts of the motion were opposed by the Liberal Party and the Nationals.

The opposition related to language recognising 26 January as Invasion Day and Day of Mourning, and calls for urgent federal action on racism and violence against First Peoples.
