Self-Service US Fuel Station Video Sparks Debate Over Nigeria’s Attendant Culture

A video showing a woman struggling to refuel at a self-service petrol station in the United States has sparked a light-hearted discussion about the differences between refuelling in the US and Nigeria.

The footage appears to show a woman in a white dress attempting to use a fuel pump herself. She can be seen handling the nozzle awkwardly, spilling some fuel and appearing frustrated as she tries to complete the process.

The moment has resonated with viewers familiar with Nigeria’s more traditional petrol station model, where attendants commonly handle the refuelling process for customers.

That system remains familiar across Nigeria, although the country is beginning to introduce self-service options. NNPC Retail commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja in September 2026, allowing customers to complete fuel transactions independently. The company said it plans to expand the model to additional locations.

The contrast has turned the video into a relatable moment about how everyday tasks can feel very different depending on the country and the services people are accustomed to using.

The footage does not establish the woman’s identity or location beyond the apparent US setting, and the video should be understood as a humorous comparison of refuelling habits rather than a broader judgement about motorists.
