O’Brien says Liberals can govern alone

Deputy opposition leader Ted O’Brien says the Liberal Party has the depth to take on Labor even if the Coalition split is not resolved.

Deputy opposition leader Ted O’Brien has declared the Liberal Party capable of standing on its own if talks with the Nationals fail to reunite the Coalition.

Speaking on the ABC’s 7.30 program, O’Brien said voters wanted a stable and effective opposition, regardless of whether it came from a reunited Coalition or the Liberals acting alone.

O’Brien said Australia was best served by a Coalition but stopped short of committing to a deal, saying the outcome of negotiations remained uncertain.

He said that if the Coalition could not be restored, he was confident the Liberal Party had sufficient talent to hold the Albanese government to account.

The comments come as negotiations continue between the Liberals and Nationals following their public split, with both sides insisting talks remain constructive.
