No US Request for Australian Ships Amid Hormuz Tensions

Australia is not preparing to send naval ships to the Middle East — at least for now.

Defence Minister Richard Marles says the United States has not asked Australia to deploy forces to the Strait of Hormuz, despite rising global tensions and concerns about oil supply routes.

Speaking publicly, Marles made it clear there is currently no formal request from Washington.

That means no immediate military commitment is on the table.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, with a large share of global oil passing through it. Any disruption can quickly impact fuel prices worldwide — including in Australia.

Marles acknowledged the global importance of keeping the strait open but stressed the government is taking a cautious, step-by-step approach.

He said Australia is focused on ensuring fuel continues to reach where it’s needed, while urging Australians not to panic.

“Go about your business as usual,” was the message.

The government has already taken steps to manage supply pressures, including releasing fuel reserves and monitoring distribution closely.

At the same time, Marles left the door open for future involvement.

If the United States does formally request assistance, Australia will assess the situation carefully — weighing both national interest and how it can best contribute.

That decision, he said, would not be automatic.

Instead, it would involve a detailed review of risks, strategic priorities and Australia’s role in supporting global stability.

For now, the key takeaway is simple:

Australia is watching closely — but not acting militarily.

What happens next depends on how the situation in the Middle East evolves, and whether allies call for support.
