Colin Boyce will move a spill motion against Nationals leader David Littleproud when the party meets in Canberra at 2pm on Monday.
The motion comes as politicians return to parliament ahead of federal sittings resuming on Tuesday. Boyce has acknowledged the challenge will fail, saying Littleproud’s leadership is secure and will be “comprehensively voted in”.
Boyce said he was pursuing the motion in the hope of forcing broader leadership change within both the Nationals and the Liberal Party, and restarting Coalition negotiations.
He warned the Nationals risk “political suicide” by attempting to operate without Liberal Party support.
Nationals MPs are set to debate the future of the Coalition at the party room meeting. Senior Nationals MP Darren Chester plans to move a separate motion urging the party to urgently negotiate a renewed Coalition agreement for the remainder of the parliamentary term.
