Nationals cool on Coalition reunion

The Nationals have replied to the Liberals’ offer to re-form the Coalition but say there is “no rush” to reunite.

Senior Nationals MP Michael McCormack said the party had sent a “careful” and “diplomatic” response to Liberal leader Sussan Ley, without revealing whether her conditions had been accepted.

Speaking to Sky News, McCormack said the Nationals wanted time to consider the proposal rather than rushing a decision.

He said the party did not want to repeat what he described as Labor’s habit of pushing legislation through parliament too quickly.

McCormack said the situation required “cool and wise heads” and warned the Coalition could not continue indefinitely in its current fractured state.

The response comes amid ongoing talks about whether the Liberals and Nationals can reunite after their recent split.
