A power fault near Armadale left Melbourne commuters stranded on trains for up to two hours during peak hour disruptions through the new Metro Tunnel.
Metro Trains Melbourne has confirmed new details about Tuesday evening’s major disruptions affecting services running through the Metro Tunnel.
The issues began around 5pm when a fault in the overhead power supply near Armadale affected Cranbourne and Pakenham line services.
The fault also halted trains travelling through the Metro Tunnel and part of the Sunbury line, forcing Metro Trains to suspend services between West Footscray and Caulfield to carry out repairs.
Metro Trains said the two trains closest to the fault were stopped, with passengers required to remain on board until it was safe to move.
On one train, passengers waited about 90 minutes before being assisted off.
On the second train, passengers were trapped for nearly two hours before being escorted off and required to walk along the track to nearby Malvern station.
The disruptions occurred during the evening peak and compounded delays across multiple lines.
