Marles downplays reports of CGT changes

Deputy prime minister Richard Marles says the government’s tax settings on housing have not changed, playing down reports of capital gains tax reform.

Richard Marles said reports suggesting changes to capital gains tax discounts were inaccurate, insisting government policy remains unchanged.

Speaking to ABC News Breakfast, Marles said Labor’s housing strategy continues to focus on increasing supply rather than tax reform.

His comments followed reports in the Australian Financial Review that the government was considering changes to CGT settings.

Marles acknowledged housing affordability posed intergenerational challenges but said the government’s response centred on building more homes.

He stopped short of ruling out future changes, but said no current policy shift was underway.
