Lidia Thorpe to move Senate motion on alleged Invasion Day bombing attempt

Independent senator Lidia Thorpe will introduce a Senate motion condemning the alleged attempted bombing of an Invasion Day rally in Perth last month.

Thorpe confirmed the motion during an interview on ABC RN Breakfast, saying it aims to acknowledge trauma experienced by families present at the rally and to build parliamentary solidarity in response to the alleged incident.

She said the response from the federal government had been inadequate and described what she called “double standards” in the public and political reaction to the alleged attempt.

According to Thorpe, the alleged device was a homemade fragmentation bomb packed with screws and ball bearings and was allegedly thrown into a crowd that included families.

She accused the prime minister of failing to issue an immediate and independent condemnation, claiming his response only came after being questioned at a press conference.

Thorpe said the incident reflected what she described as rising racism and hate directed at First Peoples, stating such hostility had become increasingly normalised.

The matter remains before the courts, and the allegations have not been tested at trial.
