Liberals go solo as Coalition splits

The Liberal Party has debuted a slimmed-down, Liberal-only frontbench as the Nationals were pushed aside after the Coalition split.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley led the new-look opposition into Question Time with fewer colleagues on the frontbench.

Senior Liberal Angus Taylor, widely viewed as harbouring leadership ambitions, sat directly behind Ley over her left shoulder.

Nationals leader David Littleproud, who previously occupied a seat directly behind Ley, was shifted back and to the side.

Littleproud was seated next to Nationals deputy Kevin Hogan.

The Nationals, once interspersed among Liberal MPs, were moved into a separate block of seats alongside the Liberal benches.

Liberals sat tightly grouped behind Ley, filling every seat on the main opposition benches.

As the Nationals took their new positions further from the frontbench, MP Darren Chester looked up to the press gallery and mimed binoculars with his hands.

“Testing, testing,” Chester called out, pretending to speak into a microphone.
