Ley targets rates as PM snaps back

Sussan Ley opened opposition questions by attacking Labor on interest rates as Anthony Albanese fired back with cost-of-living claims.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley used her opening Question Time slot to raise mortgage stress ahead of an imminent Reserve Bank decision.

Ley said average mortgage holders were paying about $21,000 more each year in interest under Labor and were anxiously awaiting the Reserve Bank’s cash rate call.

As Ley exceeded her 30-second time limit, Labor MPs called out “time”, prompting protests from the opposition benches.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded sharply, telling his own MPs not to yell out.

He then listed Labor’s cost-of-living measures, including free TAFE, before contrasting current inflation levels with those when he was elected almost four years ago.

The exchange came just minutes before the Reserve Bank of Australia was due to announce its latest cash rate decision.
