Ley camp claims leadership numbers

Allies of opposition leader Sussan Ley insist she has the numbers to survive growing leadership speculation.

Members of Team Sussan Ley have moved to project confidence amid renewed talk of a spill.

Ley said on Tuesday she will deliver the opposition’s budget reply speech in May, a move seen as reinforcing her grip on the leadership.

Speculation has intensified over when Angus Taylor may move against her, following the withdrawal of right-faction contender Andrew Hastie.

Ley defeated Taylor in the leadership ballot on 13 May 2025, winning 29 votes to 25 after Peter Dutton lost his seat at the election.

Several votes from that ballot have since fallen away due to retirements and electoral losses, leaving the numbers tight.

Speaking to Sky News, Ley ally Andrew Wallace dismissed suggestions of an imminent challenge.

Wallace said he did not believe there was an active move to roll Ley and insisted she retained the support of the party room.
