Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and Nationals leader David Littleproud have agreed to continue discussions as negotiations over the Coalition split remain unresolved.
Speaking to media outside a church, Ley confirmed she held what she described as “constructive” and “friendly” talks with Littleproud the previous evening.
However, she declined to say whether she would accept the Nationals’ demand to reinstate three senators who crossed the floor and were subsequently removed from the opposition frontbench.
Ley said both parties had agreed to continue discussions, stressing their shared position on the non-Labor side of politics and areas of common ground.
Coalition negotiations remain ongoing, with no formal agreement announced on conditions for reunification.
At the same time, Ley is facing the prospect of a leadership challenge from shadow treasurer Angus Taylor in the coming weeks.
Ley said she was confident she would remain leader through to the federal budget, expressing confidence in delivering the opposition’s budget reply speech in May and outlining a significant policy agenda ahead.
