Leeser urges restraint over Herzog protests

Liberal frontbencher Julian Leeser has urged protesters to stand down during Isaac Herzog’s visit, warning against re-traumatising the Jewish community.

Julian Leeser said he welcomed Israeli president Isaac Herzog’s visit but discouraged marches near Jewish sites.

Speaking to ABC RN Breakfast, Leeser said Herzog was visiting to comfort families affected by the Bondi terror attack last December.

Leeser said the Jewish community had been “massively traumatised” and should not be subjected to further distress.

He confirmed he had written to NSW police commissioner Mal Lanyon requesting extended no-go zones around Bondi and Jewish communal buildings.

Leeser said he was pleased the NSW government had acted on that request.

Asked about calls from UN commissioner Chris Sidoti for Herzog to be arrested, Leeser said Australia does not detain visiting foreign leaders over differing views on human rights records.
