Hundreds paddle out for boy lost in Sydney shark attack

Hundreds of surfers, swimmers and community members have paddled out at Sydney’s North Bondi beach to honour the life of 12-year-old Nico Antic, who died after a shark bite last weekend.

The memorial was organised by Nico’s school, Rose Bay Secondary College, bringing together classmates, teachers, family friends and members of the wider beach community.

Nico sustained critical injuries after being bitten by a shark near a popular swimming spot at Vaucluse in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Despite emergency efforts, he later died from his injuries.

On Sunday morning, surfers formed a ring in the water off North Bondi, while crowds gathered along the shoreline to watch in silence. Many participants carried boards, flowers and wore black armbands in tribute.

Nico was remembered by those who attended as a happy, vibrant and social young person, with speakers paying tribute to his love of the ocean and strong connection to the local community.
