Greens slam Herzog invite as “immoral”

The Greens have failed in a bid to force the federal government to revoke an invitation to Israeli president Isaac Herzog.

Greens senator David Shoebridge attempted to suspend standing orders to move a motion calling on the government to rescind the invitation.

The move followed an earlier motion by independent senator Lidia Thorpe condemning racism against First Nations people after the alleged attempted bombing at an Invasion Day rally in Perth.

Shoebridge described the invitation as “immoral” and accused the government of rolling out the red carpet for a leader he said had incited genocide.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the invitation, despite opposition from Greens senators and rank-and-file Labor members.

The Coalition rejected the motion, with shadow foreign minister Michaelia Cash accusing the Greens of parliamentary theatrics.

The government also declined to support the motion, ensuring it failed.
