Greens blast Labor over consultants inquiry

The Greens have accused Labor of gutting a parliamentary inquiry after rejecting every recommendation targeting major consulting firms.

Barbara Pocock said the government’s response to a parliamentary inquiry into consultancies was “woefully inadequate”.

Pocock, who alongside Labor senator Deborah O’Neil questioned executives during the inquiry, said the committee uncovered “a tidal wave of malpractice, poor governance and structural failures”.

The inquiry was triggered by allegations PwC Australia misused confidential government information to help international clients minimise tax.

The government responded on Monday by merely “noting” all 40 recommendations and accepting none of them.

The report called for strict limits on equity partners at the big four firms and the separation of audit and consulting arms.

Pocock said Labor had ignored clear advice and continued to approve contracts for firms accused of unethical conduct.
