Free travel offered after train chaos

The Victorian government has offered a single day of free public transport after commuters were trapped on trains for up to two hours during peak-hour disruptions.

The transport minister, Gabrielle Williams, confirmed affected passengers would receive a free day of travel worth $11.40 following a power fault near Armadale.

Two trains were halted close to the fault, with passengers stuck on board for between 90 minutes and two hours before being escorted off and directed to walk to Malvern station.

Williams apologised for the disruption and said passengers could contact the Transport Victoria call centre to receive compensation.

She said early investigations showed no indication the disruption was linked to the Metro Tunnel’s move to full-capacity operations earlier in the week.

Williams said the fault appeared to be a cable issue near Hawksburn, with investigations continuing to determine the exact cause.
