Police have resumed firearms testing in Victoria’s high country as the search for fugitive Dezi Freeman enters its next phase.
Victoria Police confirmed detectives would again conduct firearms testing inside the Mount Buffalo national park search zone on Tuesday afternoon.
The testing relates to the ongoing search for Dezi Freeman, who allegedly shot dead two police officers and wounded a third in Porepunkah on 26 August.
Police said the testing would run for about an hour and follows similar tests carried out in November.
Those earlier tests informed planning ahead of the current five-day search operation, which began on Monday.
A single gunshot was reported to police about two hours after Freeman fled into bushland behind his property.
Investigators believe the sound may have been Freeman killing himself.
After two days of searching, police have not publicly reported locating Freeman.
Authorities said they do not believe Freeman is alive if he remains in the Mount Buffalo area and that the search is focused on recovering his body.
However, police said they are also considering two alternative scenarios: that Freeman fled the region and is being harboured elsewhere, or that he escaped the area unassisted.
