Chalmers slams Ley over treasury secretary attack

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has accused Sussan Ley of desperation after she targeted the treasury secretary over the Reserve Bank’s rate hike.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers hit back at opposition leader Sussan Ley during Question Time as the Liberals focused on rising interest rates.

Ley questioned why the prime minister’s “hand-picked” Treasury secretary, Jenny Wilkinson, had also voted on the Reserve Bank board to lift the cash rate.

Chalmers said it was inappropriate to target a senior public servant in parliament.

He described Ley’s line of attack as reflecting “a level of desperation” and defended Wilkinson as one of the country’s finest public servants.

Chalmers also pointed to the leadership of women across Australia’s major economic institutions, citing the recent appointment of Sarah Court as chair of ASIC.
