Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the political right in Australia is not growing but splintering, as support for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation increases at the expense of the Coalition.
Speaking on ABC News Breakfast, Chalmers said the rise of One Nation reflected fragmentation on the right, describing the emergence of “three divisive parties of the far right in Australia”.
He said One Nation was drawing votes directly from the Coalition rather than expanding the overall right-wing vote, while Labor remained focused on what he described as mainstream priorities.
An Essential poll conducted for the Guardian last week found 23% of voters who supported the Coalition at the 2025 election now intend to vote for One Nation.
The poll also found that 8% of former Labor voters had shifted their support to One Nation.
