Adani hid $600k LNP donation before election

Adani donated more than $600,000 to Queensland’s Liberal National party before the 2024 state election, making it the party’s largest single federal donor, with the payments not publicly disclosed for a year.

The donations were made through federal party accounts and were disclosed via the Australian Electoral Commission on 2 February 2026, rather than through Queensland’s state-level disclosure system.

Queensland law requires real-time disclosure of state election donations, typically within seven days, and as little as 24 hours for donations made in the final week before polling day. However, the Greens say a federal electoral funding loophole allowed the donations to avoid those state disclosure requirements before voters went to the polls.

Most of the money was delivered in several large instalments in the months leading up to the election, making the donations four of the five largest reported to the party during the 2024–25 federal reporting period, behind only a $200,000 contribution from the Morris Family Trust.

Greens MP Michael Berkman said the Liberal National party had “exploited a gaping loophole in our donation laws”, arguing that voters were denied the opportunity to make an informed decision at the ballot box.

Transparency International Australia also raised concerns about the timing of the donations, warning that delayed disclosure undermined public confidence and transparency during election campaigns.

The Liberal National party said it had complied with all legal disclosure requirements.

Adani’s Australian arm, Bravus Mining and Resources, said it had met its obligations under the law.
