Shadow minister Andrew Hastie has described Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s decision to table the Liberal Party’s internal election review in parliament as a bold political manoeuvre.
Speaking on ABC Radio National’s RN Breakfast, Hastie said Albanese showed a sense of “theatre” when he presented the document, which the Liberal Party had previously attempted to keep private.
The review, examining the Coalition’s federal election campaign, had already begun leaking to media outlets before it was formally tabled in parliament.
Hastie said the party’s new leadership had already acknowledged mistakes made during the campaign but insisted the opposition was now focused on future policy.
He said the Liberal Party’s priorities were to restore Australians’ standard of living and strengthen national security.
During the interview, RN Breakfast host Sally Sara questioned why the opposition had been highlighting the case of women and children detained in a Syrian camp linked to Islamic State rather than focusing on economic issues.
Hastie said the issue related to the party’s broader platform of protecting Australia’s way of life and addressing security concerns.
He also argued that the international rules-based order and the United Nations had become ineffective, describing the current global environment as a new stage in world affairs.
Hastie warned Australia needed to strengthen its self-sufficiency and industrial capacity, pointing to the country’s limited fuel reserves and vulnerability to disruptions in international shipping.
