Jackie French reveals the real wombat behind Diary of a Wombat

Jackie French has shared the true story behind Diary of a Wombat, revealing how a real wombat named Mothball inspired one of Australia’s most successful children’s picture books.

French met Mothball nearly 30 years ago after the injured wombat was rescued and brought to her property in New South Wales’ Araluen Valley. The wombat, known for her obsession with carrots and destructive behaviour, was eventually released back into the wild but continued to return during drought periods.

French says Mothball’s demanding, single-minded habits formed the basis of the book’s diary-style narration. The story was written to reflect how wombats think and communicate, using simple key words rather than complex sentences.

First published in the early 2000s, Diary of a Wombat has sold more than one million copies in Australia, won about 40 awards and been translated into around 30 languages. It was illustrated by Bruce Whatley.

French says Mothball remained part of her life for years and her influence is still felt every time the book is read. She describes the relationship as a rare privilege of being accepted by a wild animal rather than owning a pet.
