Butler warns ebike surge is a real emergency

Mark Butler said dangerous ebike riding has become a real emergency after riders swarmed the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

About 40 riders travelled along the main deck of the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic, where cycling is prohibited.

NSW Police are investigating the incident, with no arrests or charges laid so far.

Butler said the surge in ebike use escalated during Covid and has since exploded.

He told Channel Seven’s Sunrise program the issue was driving communities to frustration.

Butler said inconsistent ebike laws across states were a menace.

He called for all governments to take strong and sensible action.
