Independent senator Lidia Thorpe criticised political and media silence after a man was charged with terrorism over an alleged attempted bombing at a Perth Invasion Day protest.
Thorpe spoke shortly before question time on Thursday, responding to confirmation that a 31-year-old man had been charged with terrorism in relation to the 26 January incident.
The charge relates to an alleged attempted bombing at an Invasion Day protest in Perth.
Thorpe made her remarks before Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a formal statement in parliament addressing the charge.
She said the alleged act came from the same “element of hate” directed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Thorpe also criticised what she described as a lack of public and political attention following the incident.
