Albanese backs First Nations after terror charge

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Parliament the government “stands with” First Nations communities following terrorism charges over an alleged Perth attack.

Albanese addressed the House before question time after a 31-year-old man was charged with a terrorism offence over the alleged attempted bombing of an Invasion Day rally in Perth on 26 January.

Authorities said the Australian Federal Police and ASIO were engaged on the same day the alleged device was thrown.

Albanese said First Nations people across Australia were grappling with disbelief, anger and fear following the incident.

He said he had met with Indigenous leaders in the past 24 hours and told Parliament the government, the parliament and the nation “see you and we stand with you”.

The prime minister said authorities would do everything required to keep people safe.

Albanese repeated advice from AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett that the joint counter-terrorism team believes there is no residual risk to the community.

Opposition deputy leader Sussan Ley said the alleged incident had provoked anxiety, shock and concern across Indigenous communities and the wider nation.
