Burke backs First Nations after terror charge

Home affairs minister Tony Burke has issued a statement responding to terrorism charges laid over the alleged attempted bombing at a Perth Invasion Day rally.

Burke said First Nations people have the right to gather peacefully without fearing for their safety.

The statement was issued jointly with minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy and Perth MP Patrick Gorman.

They said WA police, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO were engaged within 40 minutes of the alleged incident.

Burke said the rapid response ensured the right agencies, with the right experience, were involved from the outset.

He said racism and bigotry have no place in Australian society and all Australians have the right to feel safe and protected from violence.

The statement said the government stands with the First Nations community in Perth and all those affected.
