Move to eject Nationals delayed in Senate

A Senate motion to remove Nationals senators from key parliamentary committees has been delayed due to procedural timing rules.

Opposition leader in the Senate Michaelia Cash prepared a motion to remove Nationals senators from multiple Senate committees.

The move followed the Nationals’ shift to the crossbench, triggering arguments over committee quotas for government, opposition and crossbench members.

Under the proposal, the Nationals would have been removed from 12 Senate committees.

Nationals senator Matt Canavan was set to lose the most positions, sitting on seven committees.

The motion has been delayed due to technical Senate timing rules and will not be brought back until the Senate resumes sittings from 2 March.

Senators will be in Canberra next week for estimates hearings, preventing the motion from being considered.
