Pyne tells Liberals to stop media leaks

Former Liberal minister Christopher Pyne has urged Coalition MPs to stop airing internal disputes publicly and give leader Sussan Ley “clear air”.

Speaking at the National Press Club, Christopher Pyne said Sussan Ley was doing “a perfectly good job” but was being undermined by colleagues discussing party divisions in the media.

Pyne warned Liberal MPs to stay off television and radio unless they were focused on opposing the Labor government.

He said the role of the opposition was to scrutinise government policy, not to publicly debate leadership or Coalition tensions.

Pyne acknowledged the trauma within the party following the Coalition’s historic election defeat, but said those discussions should remain internal.

He said internal disagreements should be dealt with “inside the party room”, rather than played out on outlets such as the ABC, Sky News or commercial media.
