Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spoken with the president of the United Arab Emirates as thousands of Australians remain stranded in the Middle East following flight disruptions linked to escalating regional conflict.
Albanese held a call with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the situation affecting Australians currently in the Gulf nation. Around 24,000 Australians are in the UAE, with many unable to leave due to suspended or disrupted commercial flights.
The travel disruptions follow bombings carried out by Iran in response to weekend military strikes by the United States and Israel.
During the discussion, Albanese thanked the UAE government for supporting Australians affected by the crisis. Both leaders also emphasised the importance of restoring commercial air services as soon as conditions allow.
The prime minister separately spoke with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, with the two leaders exchanging views on the unfolding Middle East situation and the consular challenges facing their governments.
Australian authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as regional tensions affect international travel routes.
