Ley sets terms for Coalition reunion

Opposition leader Sussan Ley says the Coalition can reunite this week, but only if the Nationals accept strict conditions.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley says the Liberal–National Coalition could reform as early as this week, provided her terms are met.

Ley said she expects to meet Nationals leader David Littleproud again today as talks continue following the parties’ public split.

She said the offer to the Nationals included mandatory shadow cabinet solidarity and recognition that the Coalition’s joint party room and shadow cabinet must have primacy over individual party rooms.

Ley also confirmed that three Nationals senators who crossed the floor would remain excluded from the frontbench for six months under the proposal.

She said the conditions had overwhelming support within the Liberal party room.

The Coalition fractured after disagreements over discipline and the handling of Labor’s hate speech laws, with negotiations continuing over whether the partnership can be restored.
