Federal police have charged a Melbourne Airport worker accused of giving a Nazi salute to Jewish schoolchildren inside a terminal.
The Australian Federal Police has charged a 23-year-old Melbourne Airport employee over an alleged Nazi salute directed at Jewish school-aged children.
In a statement, the AFP said the man, from Greenvale in Melbourne’s north, was arrested after an incident inside a terminal at Melbourne Airport.
Police allege the man left the terminal shortly after the incident, which was reported to federal authorities.
AFP officers reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed witnesses before attending a Greenvale address, where the man was arrested.
The AFP said the accused was an airport worker who held an Aviation Security Identification Card.
He has been charged with one count of public display of prohibited Nazi symbols or giving a Nazi salute, under Commonwealth criminal law.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and is subject to mandatory minimum sentencing provisions.
The man is due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 3 March.
The charge was laid by the AFP’s National Security Investigations team, established last year to target threats to Australia’s social cohesion, including antisemitism.
